Thursday, April 27, 2017, will go down in the annals of history as the day opposition leader Raila Odinga was confirmed for a fourth time as a presidential candidate.
This time round, he was picked as the flag- bearer for the National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition that also brings along leaders Kalonzo Musyoka, Moses Wetangula, Musalia Mudavadi and Isaac Ruto.
Kalonzo was picked as Raila’s running mate, for the second time in five years. The pair lost to President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013.
Up until the day the announcement was made, members of Kalonzo’s Wiper party were pushing for him to be named flag- bearer.
When it did not go their way, the leaders from Ukambani led by Minority Leader in the National Assembly Francis Nyenze and Wiper Chairperson David Musila (who decamped from the party after nominations) termed the agreement a raw deal that would be hard to sell in Ukambani.
Nyenze said they were not privy to the arrangement where Kalonzo settled for the deputy president position and that the Akamba people were asking questions.
However, Kalonzo moved with speed on Friday, April 28, to dismiss Nyenze and Musila and said the arrangement was arrived at after intense negotiations.
He said Raila is the best option to move the country forward.
“We discussed everything about the party, and even the Deputy Party Leader Farah Maalim is versed with the details of the deal. I am the party leader and the decision is in the best interests of the party,” Kalonzo said in a late night press conference at Ole Sereni hotel.
He asked Nyenze to tame his utterances which he termed as utter nonsense and even threatened to de- whip him if he continued making inflammatory statements.
Attending a funeral early in the day in Kangundo Machakos County, Kalonzo asked residents to support Raila as he stands a better chance to beat Uhuru in August.
“You should ignore leaders who are being used by politicians from outside the region to split our vote in the August election. I want to tell all voters from this region to stand firm in support of my brother Raila, as he is the only person with the requisite political experience to lead this country,” Kalonzo said as quoted by Nation.
NASA will face off with Jubilee on August 8, 2017, general elections.
