Chelsea seemed to have switched off when they faced their London rivals on Saturday for the FA Cup finals. The blues started off poorly and Arsenal caught them unawares.
Not only did the Blues take far too long to get out of the blocks after kick-off, they also forgot to put on their black armbands in memory of the victims of the Manchester bombing.
The armbands had been placed under the players’ ‘anthem jackets’ which they decided not to wear and, therefore, got left in the dressing-room. It was an unfortunate error that was rectified for the start of the second half.
Alexis Sanchez reaffirmed his love affair with Wembley in just the fourth minute of this final by scoring a goal that at first was considered controversial. The Chile international netted his seventh Wembley goal in five starts at the national stadium to give Arsenal a surprise lead.
The strike also took Sanchez’s tally to 30 in a single season for the first time in his career. This only re-energizes other club’s chase of Alexis Sanchez among them includes Chelsea, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain who would love to snatch Sanchez off the Gunners this summer.
He might moan and groan at his team-mates, but he also leads by example and is a nightmare for his opponents.
Chelsea later on equalized through Diego Costa but his goal was canceled out soon after by Ramsey who finished off an impressive pass by Olivier Girud.
The futures of Arsene Wenger, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are at the top of the agenda of what could be a defining summer for Arsenal. Who they keep and who they bring in could well determine whether or not their absence from the Champions League next season is temporary or long-term.
